Oak and Ash Desk Lamp TS-0129

Part of the Ashurst Collection, this compact desk or bedside lamp combines a circular Oak base with a slender steam-bent Ash stem. The gently curved stem is mortised into the base with a slight backward tilt, creating a simple, balanced form that allows the natural grain and character of the two timbers to remain the focus.

Both the Oak and Ash are locally sourced, UK-grown timbers, selected and crafted in my Sussex workshop. The contrast between the more strongly figured Oak base and the lighter Ash stem gives the lamp a subtle variation in tone while retaining the understated appearance associated with the Ashurst Collection.

In keeping with the smaller proportions of the lamp, it is fitted with a high-quality solid brass E14 bulb holder. Small brass cable guides are individually handmade to hold the vintage-style braided cable neatly against the stem, with an inline on/off switch providing convenient operation.

The E14 fitting is suitable for a wide range of LED bulbs, allowing the appearance and character of the light to be changed to suit its setting. A filament-style LED bulb works particularly well with the simple form and natural materials of the lamp.

Every timber surface is carefully hand-sanded and finished with Odie’s Oil, enhancing the natural grain of the Oak and Ash while providing a durable finish.
