The Wakehurst Collection

The Wakehurst Collection has its origins in a commission from Wakehurst–Kew to create a series of specially designed lamps for the library within Wakehurst Mansion. The timber provided for these lamps carried a remarkable provenance, having originally grown within the Wakehurst estate before continuing its life there as information and interpretation boards around the gardens.

Repurposing this timber to create the Wakehurst Library Lamps brought its story full circle, returning it to the Mansion in a new form to illuminate the library. The commission became the

inspiration for the Wakehurst Collection and, in turn, for the use of “Hurst” in the names of the other Totally Steamed collections.

Provenance is at the heart of the Wakehurst Collection. Rather than being defined by a particular style or form, it brings together pieces handcrafted from timber with a genuine and meaningful connection to notable places, heritage properties and recognised landscapes. Wherever possible, the story of the timber is preserved within the finished piece, creating a lasting connection between its origin, its history and its new purpose.

As suitable timber with a known provenance becomes available, the Wakehurst Collection will continue to evolve. Some pieces may be created only in very limited numbers, while others will be entirely unique, each carrying forward the story and character of the timber from which it was made.
